Maya Garaway Week 5: Art Crunch
Well, this is all I have been doing for the past two months so why not write about it.
Recently, I have been on what I have been calling “art crunch mode” so that I can finish a portfolio that I am happy with and use for my applications to art schools. The requirement for each school changes slightly but in general, each school requires 12-20 pictures of your best artwork. It can be any medium, design, shape, size, etc. Anything. Sounds pretty simple right? I thought that too. It would be, but I have once again learned that I am a perfectionist which means I am very selective about what I deem “portfolio worthy.” It's an honor at this point if I choose a piece to be in the portfolio. Currently, I have eleven (it was ten, but I genuinely just found another piece I liked as I was writing this) pieces that I have awarded the honor of being portfolio worthy too. So, as I have said before, crunch mode.
Although this is a time-consuming task, it is also quite enjoyable too. I would much rather do a bunch of art than have to write one or two supplemental essays for each school. It is also interesting to see how my art develops. A lot of the schools look for experimentation, which means I get to play with different types of materials and see what happens. So far I have worked with cardboard, newspaper, ink, paints, charcoal, and more with so many different types of projects. This experimentation has led me to discover my own style. I have realized that I love working with just a normal pen and that I tend to include a lot of nature and realistic aspects in my work with a peaceful feeling to the pieces. After a while though, it does become a bit much and I have to remind myself to take breaks or fight through a period of art block, but I am proud of what my art has become. Currently, I am working on a life-sized installation and a realistic painting of a flower vase. Wish me luck!
Also, I wish I could upload one of my animations here but I am not sure how to do that so here is an in-progress picture of one of the current pieces.
WOW. I definitely know how you feel. Applying for film school is also pretty intense. I have to work on so many different types of films and it all has to be done so soon! I am so nervous. I really like the piece you put here. It's super cool. I also really love how after working on so many pieces you found your style of art. I hope that after I have worked enough on all my films and projects I will find my area of specialization and my own style or signature.
ReplyDeleteI always love hearing about your art pieces and this one has blown me away. Experimentation is key in art because I find it lets you discover what you like without so much pressure on yourself. You got this!
