Adi Chaham week 5- Wednesday Nights
Many families have a dedicated day or night they specifically have to hang out with each other and spend quality time with one another. While some families may watch tv or movies together, others may play games together and if they were like my family, they would eat together.
Like we learned in How to Read Literature Like a Professor, food connects people, so what better way to connect with your family then having dinner together?
Wednesday nights at the Chaham family household are dedicated to family dinners. Now, to be clear, these are in addition to Friday nights but, on Friday nights we are usually with other people and therefore don’t really spend time together.
These dedicated dinners started a few years back as my siblings and I starting getting older, getting our licenses and overall, growing up. Each with our own little lives, plans and activities, although we lived together, we wouldn’t see each other as much as you’d think. There would be days, when the only time we would see one another was in the mornings when we all drove to school together but after school, each one of us had our own things to do. At one point, my parents had enough and decided to do something about it.
That was when Wednesday nights became family nights. Now, obviously if we have something important, we prioritize it. For example, if one of us has homework or a test the next day that requires us to study, or an activity like a sport or something like BBYO or cteen, either that our dinner together gets moved to another day or, we just would push it to Friday when we eat together regardless.
On these nights we either go out to dinner together, eat at home or if we’re not hungry go out to ice cream.
While it may seem a bit much, I honestly enjoy it and think its super important to make sure you see those who live in the house with you and spend quality time with them even with everyones busy schedule because, who knows what’ll happen when we go off to college and in a few years, have our own families. I highly recommend cherishing the moments you have with your family because you’ll never know when you’ll have a moment like that again.
Do you guys have any weekly/monthly activities or dinners you do with your family?
This is an amazing tradition. Our lives move so fast and so much is going on at the same time that we lose track of the things that are actually important to us. Personally, I try to spend as much time as I can with my grandparents before I go to college similarly to how you spend time weekly with your family.
