Ariella Green Week 2: Labor Day
Happy Labor Day Weekend friends! As I was contemplating what to write about this week’s blog post, I thought about what is Labor Day and why do we celebrate it in the United States. All I know about this holiday weekend is that the banks and post offices are closed, and school resumes after Labor Day weekend up north.
Upon further research, Labor celebrates the achievements of the American workers and it began in the late 1800s after labor activities fought to have a holiday to recognize their contributions to society. However, Labor Day was not recognized by all fifty states immediately following the workers’ protests. Oregon was the first U.S state to pass a law recognizing Labor Day in 1887. In the same year, Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York passed laws as well. Many other states joined in celebrating Labor Day and in 1894, Congress made it a Federal holiday with President Grover Cleveland’s support and signature.
There are two people that stake claim in founding Labor Day and those men are Peter J. McGuire and Matthew Maguire, and both attended the Labor parade helped in New York City. However, research gives the credit Matthew Maguire because he served as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.
I had also just learned that there is a Labor Day parade to celebrate this holiday as a way to show “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations”. Also, by having famous men and women give speeches about this day.
Labor Day is celebrating its 128th birthday this year and I hope you all have a fantastic Labor Day weekend by doing what we Americans love to do on these holidays: a barbeque. Why do we do that? I have no idea.
