Rosalie Weiss- Week 10- Recovering From a Concussion
The day before this blog was due, I hit my head pretty hard during a soccer game. I thought I was fine at first, but as I started driving home, I began feeling sick and ended up throwing up in the target parking lot. I then went to the hospital, which was conveniently right across the street, and was told I had a mild concussion. I didn't follow the concussion recovery rules all that well and even went away for thanksgiving which, in hindsight, was not the best decision. Still, my symptoms were barely noticeable, and I genuinely didn't think I had a problem until I returned to school the next week.
As I began working again, I noticed how much my thinking had slowed, how frequently I forgot words, and how little motivation I had. I also found myself unable to comprehend any mildly difficult text, and it hurt my head to even try. My brain couldn't do the things it should have been able to do, which was deeply frustrating and scary. Being at school also made many of my other symptoms worse, especially my headaches and sensitivity to noise.
It has been a couple weeks since the incident, and my symptoms have persisted much longer than they should have. This is likely due to my negligence in taking the proper precautions to ensure my recovery. I have also accidentally bumped my head quite hard in the exact same spot many times since, which can’t be beneficial to the recovery process.
From this experience, I learned that when recovering from a concussion, you should listen to the health experts and let your brain rest. What do you think? Have you ever had a concussion?
