Ben Nikpour - Week 7: TS10

Midnights, Taylor Swift's tenth studio album (TS10), was released last week. The album has had tremendous success and has become her most-sold album in its first week. Additionally, since its release, Swift and her album have broken numerous records, one of which is being the first person to hold all top 10 spots on Billboard’s Hot 100. While I cannot exactly say I am surprised, I can say that I now realize the power behind the “Swiftie” fan base.

If I am being entirely honest, when I first listened to the entire album, I did not like it that much. The songs were boring and did not compare to her old music. Still, I found a few songs I enjoyed and created a ranking for the songs on the album: 1. Mastermind, 2. Anti-Hero, 3. Karma, 4. Bejeweled, 5. Midnight Rain, 6. Question…?, 7. You’re on Your own, Kid (YOYOK), 8. Lavender haze, 9. Sweet Nothing, 10. Vigilante Shit, 11. Maroon, 12. Labyrinth, 13. Snow on the Beach.

I continued to listen to all the songs hoping to like them better, and, of course, I started liking all of the tracks. Typical of Taylor Swift's music, each song tells a different story for the listener to connect to. Listening to the album on repeat allowed me to really understand the deeper meaning of the lyrics and love all her songs. While the rankings of my favorite tracks did not change much, the amount that I liked each one did, so I created an updated ranking just a few days later: 1. Mastermind, 2. Karma, 3. Anti-Hero, 4. Bejeweled, 5. Lavender Haze, 6. YOYOK, 7. Labyrinth, 8. Midnight Rain, 9. Question…?, 10. Vigilante Swift, 11. Snow on the Beach, 12. Sweet Nothing, 13. Maroon. Again, I have since decided that my rankings have changed, like moving YOYOK to one of my favorites.

Taylor Swift released more music as part of her extended “3 AM” version of the album, which included seven new songs. Like the main album, I did not like the songs at first, but after a few days, I fell in love with songs like “Paris,” “Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve,” “Bigger Than The Whole Sky,” and “The Great War.”

Swift also recently announced that she would be going on tour soon. She calls it the “Eras Tour,” which will encompass all her music from all ten albums. Unfortunately, she will not be performing in South Florida, so I guess I will be flying to New York City to see her perform.

  1. The day Midnights came out I actually listened to it on the way to school. I have not listened to the entire album just yet, but so far I really like it. I particularly like Lavender Haze, Maroon, and You're On Your Own Kid. I can't wait to listen to the rest of the album!

  2. I just wrote a blog about Anti-Hero which is my favorite song. I am not a huge fan of Taylor Swift, but I have got to say she's one of the smartest business women I know.

  3. I have not yet listened to her album, but I did hear a few songs. I think it was Anti-Hero and one other. I will try to listen to some of the songs if I remember too. Also, one of my favorite artists drew some art inspired by midnight that I think you might like. Their account is oatmilklady on instagram.
