Leah Nagle - Week 5 - Self Love Makes Everything Work

When thinking about what to write my blog on this week, I came up with an idea that not many people talk about, but is actually incredibly crucial: self-love, the place that all true happiness comes from.

So what really is self-love anyway? Self-love is telling ourselves that we are wonderful, worthy of love and happiness, beautiful, kind, loving, smart, capable, and strong, rather than telling ourselves that we are ugly, fat, selfish, worthless, not good enough, and stupid.

Many of us waste so much time beating ourselves up about what we didn’t do or what we did wrong, which unfortunately, is more natural than loving and complementing ourselves. Criticizing ourselves ends up making us so miserable, but yet, we do it anyway. How many times have you thought, “I’m so stupid” or “I’m so ugly?” Probably more than the amount of times you’ve thought, “I am a beautiful, capable, and wonderful person.”

So if criticizing ourselves makes us so miserable, why do we do it? It comes from years of criticism that we have received from others around us. We become so used to being told something negative about ourselves, that we just start to believe it's true.

The beautiful thing about understanding this concept is that if we understand something and where it came from, we can learn to change it! Those of us who really want to change, will! A thought may seem like something you cannot control, but actually, you have complete control over it. Although it may seem cringy and strange, the way to change your negative thoughts is to replace them with positive ones. Next time you catch yourself thinking, “I’m not good enough”, I challenge you to tell your brain, “No! That’s not true! I give my all to everything that I do and I am a wonderful person who deserves love and happiness.”

Anyone who is able to master this concept finds that everything in their life works better. A positive attitude towards ourselves and the world makes us grateful for everyday, genuinely happy, and helps us to attract other happy, loving, and positive people into our lives.

What do you think about the concept of self-love?
